A leading government strategist with a deep understanding of national and international education policy has been appointed CEO of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council.

Dr Carol Nicoll took up the top post on 8 February when the ALTC’s foundation Executive Director Professor Richard Johnstone stepped down.

Chair of the ALTC Board, Professor John Hay AC, welcomed Dr Nicoll’s appointment noting that she has been closely involved with some of the major reforms in higher education over the last decade including creating the policy context for the ALTC.

“Dr Nicoll was closely associated with setting up the ALTC and was also instrumental in developing the Australian Awards for University Teaching,” Professor Hay said.

Her experience at the top tiers of the public service include heading the Industry Skills Development Group and a senior post within Australian International Education as the foundation Minister-Counsellor in Brussels, a role that involved promoting Australian higher education across Europe.

Dr Nicoll said that after working in learning and teaching in higher education for most of her career, she is extremely excited about her new role and its potential for supporting universities to promote and showcase quality learning and teaching. ■
