National Teaching Fellowships

National Teaching Fellowships are awarded to outstanding scholars who are respected leaders in learning and teaching in higher education. National Teaching Fellows undertake a significant program of fellowship activities, contribute to various ALTC events and develop national and international networks appropriate to the Fellowship activities

National Teaching Fellows are expected to establish a collaborative team of internationally recognised scholars and to lead an extended seminar as part of their Fellowship program.

National Teaching Fellows will normally be expected to be released from all or most academic activities for one year and may include up to three months overseas.

Up to five National Teaching Fellowships are available in 2010.  Maximum funding available for each National Teaching Fellowship is $350,000.

Objectives

National Teaching Fellows will devise and undertake a program of fellowship activities which promote and support excellence in teaching and the scholarship of teaching in Australian higher education institutions.

National Teaching Fellows will:

  • identify learning and teaching issues that affect the Australian higher education system and facilitate approaches to addressing these issues

  • show leadership in promoting and enhancing learning and teaching in higher education and explore new possibilities

  • raise the profile of teaching and facilitate strategic change in higher education institutions

  • establish and build on national and international partnerships in learning and teaching in higher education

  • foster national and international collaboration and networking for the purposes of sharing research, innovation and good practice in learning and teaching.

Teaching Fellowships

Teaching Fellowships are awarded to undertake discipline-based or inter-disciplinary fellowship activities that promote excellence in learning and teaching.

Teaching Fellows are prominent scholars and educators in their disciplinary fields recognised by their home institutions for their capacity to make significant contributions to educational leadership into the future. Teaching Fellows undertake a program of activities with the goal of enhancing disciplinary or inter-disciplinary teaching and learning within their institution and beyond.

Teaching Fellows will normally undertake fellowship activities within their home institutions for one year. The Fellowship will provide for full release from all or most academic activities for three months full-time work on their fellowship program. Outside of this period, Teaching Fellows will undertake fellowship activities with the support of their home institutions.

The maximum funding available for each Teaching Fellowship is $100 000. Up to ten Teaching Fellowships are available in 2010.

Objectives

Teaching Fellows will devise and undertake a program of fellowship activities to promote and enhance learning and teaching in their institution and discipline. Teaching Fellows will:

  • identify learning and teaching issues and facilitate an approach to addressing these issues

  • show leadership in promoting and enhancing learning and teaching

  • generate ideas for the development of learning and teaching in higher education through an expanded network from the ALTC

  • foster networks with recipients of Australian Awards for University Teaching; and with other Teaching Fellows and educators in higher education.
